Sussex Writes
Creative writing as a powerful outreach tool
The Sussex Writes project aimed to support the creative writing needs of secondary school pupils, focusing on those who are underrepresented at FE and HE levels. A team of University of Sussex students, alongside writing and mentoring charity Little Green Pig, created and delivered creative writing workshops twice a year for pupils in Years 9 to 11 in 13 schools across East Sussex and Brighton. The project also worked to raise pupils’ confidence and support their progress in English Language GCSE and entry into HE and FE. For the student volunteers, it offered an opportunity to give back to the community and gain teaching experience.
